Farooqi held for defying Pindi entry ban


Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqi, central leader of Ahl-e-Sunnat-Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), was picked up by law-enforcement agencies from Wah Cantt after he (Maulana) tried to defy a ban over his entry in the district and deliver a speech in a mosque during Friday sermon, reliable sources told The Nation on Friday.

The ASWJ leader was later handed over to officials of counter-terrorism department who shifted him to unknown location for further investigation, sources said.

A top police officer of Rawalpindi confirmed Farooqi’s arrest.

According to sources, the law-enforcement agencies held Farooqi from GT Road when he was going to deliver Friday sermon in Markazi Jamia Masjid Lala Rukh Basti.

Earlier, the local administration had barred the accused from entering the locality but he refused to obey the orders of the local administration, sources said.

Sources disclosed that Farooqi was also invited as chief guest in Khatam-ul-Massomeen Conference at Castle Marriage Hall on GT Road, Taxila.
They said that the ASWJ leader spent a night at some unknown place in Taxila.

Talking to The Nation, a top police officer of Rawalpindi confirmed the arrest of ASWJ leader, saying he was picked up by intelligence agency and shifted to undisclosed location for questioning.
